The Harris Academy of Martial Arts

Harris International Academy

There are five (5) different types of classes taught at the Harris Academy:

  1. Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Martial Arts
  2. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with a gi
  3. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu without the gi
  4. Kalis Ilustrisimo
  5. Fitness

The Jeet Kune Do classes are a unique blend of various training methods as taught and developed by Si Gung Bruce Lee and Sifu Dan Inosanto. These training methods involve learning how to effectively and efficiently kick, punch, trap, wrestle, sweep, throw, choke and lock. When combined, these training methods will give the student the ability to adapt to any situation on the street. The first aspect of training focuses on physical fitness and self-preservation (the ability to defend yourself). The second aspect of training focuses on self-perfection (the ability to find your own unique path). During classes, students not only practice technique and perform dynamic drills, but they also spar and study tactics and strategy. If you are looking for a realistic approach to self-defense, this is the class for you!

The Filipino Martial Arts training in the Jeet Kune Do classes combines the use of single stick double stick and stick and knife training methods, as well as low line kicking, the efficient use of elbows and knees, locking, nerve hitting and empty hand against weapon training. If you are serious about learning how to defend yourself against an edged weapon, a baseball bat or tire iron, this training method is exactly what you are looking for!

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes (with and without a gi), represent the standing and ground grappling methods we employ at our academy. While this method of training looks very similar to wrestling, it is actually very different. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu contains a variety of flips, throws, take downs, sweeps, chokes, arm locks and leg locks. The goal of the training is to teach a student how to effectively neutralize a sudden ground attack and gain an advantage through leverage and positioning. The sportive element of Jiu Jitsu is emphasized. However, we occasionally add street and ring aspects to the training as well. Additionally, students are encouraged, but not required, to spar at the end of each class.

The Kalis Ilustrisimo classes are devoted to training a unique sword and dagger fighting method from the Philippines. Kalis Ilustrisimo means, "The Sword of Ilustrisimo. It was developed by a gentleman named Antonio "Tatang" Ilustrisimo. Tatang's training methods and techniques are simple, direct, efficient and highly effective.

During the Kalis Ilustrisimo classes, participants will learn and practice technique, perform simple and dynamic drills and spar occasionally. Because the focus of the training is on the sword (a bladed weapon), the movements and training methods used are very different from mainstream Filipino Martial Arts training where the emphasis is on stick work. Kalis Ilustrisimo students perform 90% of their training with a steel or aluminum sword. Additionally, students will occasionally spar with minimal protective equipment. This kind of training makes Kalis Ilustrisimo very unique!

The Fitness classes at the Harris Academy combine these various elements:

  • Boxing (conditioning and drills only - no sparring)
  • Kick boxing (conditioning and drills only - no sparring)
  • Wrestling (conditioning and drills only - no sparring)
  • Calisthenics
  • Plyometrics
  • Yoga
  • Kettlebells

If you are looking to get into great shape, this class has your name on it!
